About this week...
This week we are examining the broad structure of arguments, including functional elements and how to use them for the purpose of evaluation or analysis.
14a Project Draft
The Academic Argument Essay is the final project in this class. There's quite a bit of information on the About Final Project page.
The draft should be as complete as you can possibly make it. It should be as polished as you can make it. And, it should be as correct as you can possibly make it.
Use the assessment rubric below as a checklist and guide. Submission:
- Post one copy of your project draft in the 14a discussion thread.
- Post one copy of your project draft in the 14a assignment drop in the Week 14 assignment folder.
- Post one copy of your project draft in the 15b peer review thread.
14a Review Questions (not graded)
Over the past few weeks you've been writing very short essays ... subjects have ranged from elements of the Toulmin Model of Argument Analysis to various fallacies. All of this has been in preparation for the upcoming Academic Argument Essay that will represent the culmination of this class. The draft of that essay is your primary task this week. This review discussion is where we will go over whatever questions you might have, concepts that need to be evident in the essay, rhetorical strategies you can use to enhance your essay, organizational strategies, etc.

- There is a clear thesis that indicates the persuasive nature of essay and reveals key points.
- The introduction establishes the issue and effectively engages readers.
- Effective, relevant details reveal knowledge, analysis, and insight appropriate to persuading the audience.
- Strong data (examples, facts, etc.) support of each key point, and lead to a logical conclusion.
- Effective and appropriate details show knowledge, analysis, and insight about subject.
- Opposing arguments may be recognized and defused.
- Tone is rational and objective rather than emotional.
- Conclusion is well supported using evidence included the body of the essay.

Organization:
- There is a clear introduction, body, and conclusion in the draft.
- Each paragraph focuses on one idea by having a clear topic sentence, adequately explaining or discussing the topic, and providing appropriate evidence in support of claims made.
- Logical sequencing and smooth transitions carry the reader from one point to the next.

Fluency & correctness:
- Variation in pacing, sentence structure, and length adds interest, flow to text.
- Draft shows control over sentence structures, including punctuation use.
- Language is effective, natural, precise and, most importantly, clear.
- There are no confusing passages or sentences.
- Demonstrates skillful use of conventions including grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

- No more than 20% of the body of the essay is directly quoted (copied). The draft is at
- 1500 words, excluding title and list of references.
- MLA guidelines for formatting the paper are followed

- At least 5 academically sound sources are effectively incorporated into the draft.
- MLA guidelines for in-text citations are followed accurately.
