The Syllabus

Ever wondered why a syllabus is given at the beginning of every class? A partial answer is, "It's the law." Yes, the California Department of Education expects all instructors to prepare syllabi for their students.

A more important answer is the syllabus provides an overview of the way a particular instructor interprets a particular course. Understanding how the instructor envisions a class can help YOU to succeed in it.

A syllabus contains critical information, explanations, and even a few promises. At the very least the syllabus should contain the instructor contact information, required texts, topics covered, expectations, and attendance and grading policies.

The syllabus is also used if there is a dispute about grading, participation, or other aspects of a course, so take it seriously.

Thanks. LR
